July 20th marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Augustinian monk Gregor Mendel, who laid an important foundation of modern genetics by his experiments with crossing peas in the Brno monastery garden and the rules of inheritance named after him.
For this reason, the Leopoldina is organizing a celebratory symposium in Halle on Mendel's birthday, at which not only a great researcher will be remembered, but also Mendel medallists will take a look back at their research path. The Mendel Medal was donated by the Leopoldina to mark the Mendel anniversary in 1965.
The symposium takes place on the initiative of microbiologist Regine Kahmann ML and Leopoldina Vice President Ulla Bonas ML.
