Fellowship Program

Follow-up funding

The follow-up funding starts upon expiry of the postdoc funding and may run for up to five years. In addition to a personal follow-up support, former research fellows may receive limited support in the form of material resources and travel grants to showcase results from their postdoctoral research.

  • After expiry of the postdoc scholarship and return to Germany, a follow-up funding phase begins.
  • If the need is substantiated, follow-up funding may be provided for up to five years after returning to Germany.
  • Former postdoc scholarship fellows are also given the opportunity to present their research findings at seminars, conferences and in scientific publications.
  • In justified cases, designated scientific collaborations may be continued by short-term working placements.
  • Former postdoc scholarship recipients will be brought together and their relationship to the Academy will be maintained. Their experiences will also be used to benefit future scholarships.
  • While receiving the Leopoldina postdoc scholarship, research fellows in the US are welcome to attend the GAIN (German Academic International Network) meetings of German scientists and science sponsors that take place each year, alternately on the East and West Coast. This enables them to establish scientific contacts in their home country and to prepare for their return to Germany.

The Leopoldina also offers the following support:

  • Former research fellows are invited to Leopoldina events.
  • According to the class division of the Academy, former scholarship holders can meet at the annual class meetings in Halle. They can present the results of their sponsorship to an interested audience and establish and renew contacts.
  • The development and expansion of an electronic network of alumni are supported by the fellowship program and serves to establish contacts and exchange information between current fellows and former fellows.

From 1996 to 2008, the Leopoldina held meetings for former research fellows once every two years. Significant research results and information about people and projects from this period were published in supplements to Nova Acta Leopoldina.
