Fellowship Programme

Follow-up funding

The follow-up funding starts once the postdoc funding has come to an end and may run for up to five years. Aimed at those who previously received a Leopoldina Postdoc Scholarship, this personalised funding provides research fellows with a limited amount of support to help pay for any materials or travel costs they incur when presenting the results of their postdoc research project.

  • Research fellows become eligible for the follow-up funding once the Postdoc Scholarship has come to an end and they have returned to Germany.
  • Upon provision of a reasonable explanation, former research fellows can also apply for follow-up funding up to five years after they have returned to Germany.
  • Former Postdoc Scholarship research fellows are also given the opportunity to present their research findings at seminars, conferences and in scientific publications.
  • Scientific collaborations may be continued with short-term work placements if this is demonstrated to be necessary.
  • Former scholarship recipients will be brought together and their relationship to the Academy will be preserved. Their experiences will also be used to benefit future scholarships.
  • While receiving the Leopoldina Postdoc Scholarship, research fellows in the US are welcome to attend the GAIN (German Academic International Network) meetings of German scientists that take place each year, alternately on the East and West Coast. This gives them the opportunity to make scientific contacts in their home country and to prepare for returning to Germany.

The Leopoldina also offers the following support:

  • Former research fellows are invited to Leopoldina events.
  • Former research fellows can attend the annual meetings of their “class” in Halle. This provides them with an opportunity to present the results of their research to a specialist audience, and to make and re-establish contacts.
  • The Fellowship Programme has also created an online network for former research fellows as a way of opening up contacts between current and former research fellows and encouraging them to share knowledge and information.

From 1996 to 2008, the Leopoldina held meetings for former research fellows once every two years. Significant research results and information about people and projects from this period were published in supplements to Nova Acta Leopoldina.
