From 2017 to 2019, former Leopoldina President Professor Dr Jörg Hacker was a member of the International Advisory Board on Global Health (IAB) of the German Federal Ministry of Health. The main task of the board was to provide advice to the German Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) on the new German Global Health Strategy. In addition, the IAB was to provide impulses for the solution of global health policy challenges and to identify Germany’s options for shaping the global health architecture.

The final report of the IAB was handed over to Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn and Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development Dr Maria Flachsbarth in June 2019. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, its recommendations for a significant strengthening of the global health architecture remain relevant.

The advisory board consisted of national and international experts from various fields and was chaired by Professor Dr Ilona Kickbusch. The IAB was coordinated by the BMG and met for six non-public meetings (August and December 2017, June and November 2018, February and June 2019).
