International Relations Coordinating Committee

The International Relations Coordinating Committee (Ausschuss zur Koordinierung der Auslandsbeziehungen, AKA) represents the major German science and funding organizations. As a coordinating body, the AKA offers a framework for informal exchange regarding current developments in international scientific cooperation, the development of joint strategic considerations and the coordination of international activities of its members. It also serves as a platform for joint initiatives. In early 2018, the Leopoldina took over the secretariat of the AKA from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

The AKA comprises senior staff responsible for international relations in member organizations. It is a permanent network that facilitates an active exchange of knowledge between member organizations involved in international scientific cooperation. Regular AKA meetings are held twice a year and on special occasions.

AKA member organizations are: Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), German Research Foundation (DFG), Fraunhofer Society (FhG), Fulbright Commission, Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF), German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), Leibniz Association (WGL), German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Max Planck Society (MPG), Max Weber Foundation – German Humanities Institutes Abroad, Volkswagen Foundation and the German Science Council (WR).

The AKA is particularly interested in maintaining a continuous exchange of information with cultural and academic representatives of the German and foreign embassies.
