Returning Fellow Scholarship

The Leopoldina Fellowship Programme’s Returning Fellow Scholarship gives former Leopoldina scholarship recipients the chance to plan their future scientific careers.

The funding gives research fellows the freedom to plan projects, make applications, apply for funds and look for jobs during the transitional phase. It allows returning fellows to benefit from financial and academic support during a period of up to twelve months. The funding is not intended for fellows working towards a habilitation during this period.

Application requirements

  • This programme is aimed exclusively at scientists who have previously received Leopoldina Postdoc Scholarships.
  • Applications may be submitted at any time, at the latest two years after the Leopoldina Postdoc Scholarship has come to an end.
  • The former research fellow applies for the funding along with his or her host institute.
  • If research fellows are to receive the funding, their chosen German scientific institutions are required to accept them under the following conditions:
  • The research fellow must return to Germany to receive the funding.
  • The funded postdoc project must have been successfully completed, and a final report is to be submitted with the application. This and any other initial publications should document the results of the research carried out during the Leopoldina Postdoc Scholarship period.
  • The submitted application should be brief and contain information about the intended research area and a basic plan of the work to be undertaken during the funding period.

Other application requirements

  • The host institution agrees to make available the equipment and facilities required by the project detailed in the application.
  • The research fellow will not be given any other responsibilities at the institution for the period when he or she is receiving the Returning Fellow Scholarship.
  • The returning fellows must be entitled to make applications for their own research projects to German funding bodies such as the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

The Returning Fellow Scholarship may only be awarded in Germany. The amount corresponds to that received in the Leopoldina Postdoc Scholarship, which depends on age.

A supplementary monthly fixed amount will be paid to returning fellows with children aged 18 and under. This amounts to €400 a month for the first child and €100 a month for any further children.

The returning fellow will also receive additional €103 a month for any travel costs and supplies pertaining to the project.

The scholarship amount and any additional funding are calculated in line with the relevant guidelines of the German Research Foundation. The amount of funding may change if the German Research Foundation or the Federal Foreign Office implement new funding regulations.
