Berthold Seitz has been founding member and speaker of the Sektion Kornea in the German Ophthalmological Society DOG. Since 09/2006 he has been member of the presidency of the DOG, since 09/2011 First Vice-President of the DOG. In September 2009 he successfully established a new W3-Profesorship for Experimental Ophthalmology for lifetime in Homburg/Saar.
He made major contributions to research concerning methods of minimizing postoperative astigmatism after corneal transplantation, especially in the field of „nonmechanical“ microsurgery of the cornea using excimer and femtosecond lasers. He first defined integration patterns into the human cornea after amniotic membrane transplantation. In addition, he works on the calculation of accommodative, multifocal and toric intraocular lenses for cataract surgery – especially after corneal refractive surgery. Besides the application of autologous serum for surface diseases of the eye, his group currently studies the modalities of photodynamic therapy in case of infectious keratitis.
