Boris Bastian has made several contributions in the molecular biology of melanocytic neoplasia. The studies were primarily carried out at the University of California, San Francisco, where he works since 1997. Von 2010 to 2011 he was Chairman of the Department of Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and in September 2011 returned to UCSF. His scientific studies have resulted in an improved understanding of the molecular genetic alterations of melanoma and demonstrated that the disease is comprised of multiple genetically and clinically distinct subtypes. Several of the genetic alterations discovered by him and his collaborators have entered clinical practice to assist diagnosis and therapy stratification.
