Dietrich Stoyan is distinguished for his papers in probability and statistics, in particular on queueing theory, stochastic geometry and spatial statistics. He developed modern statistical methods for point processes. He is author of numerous monographs on these themes, which are today standard references. Additionally to his theoretical work, he published many papers in astronomy, forestry and materials science. He is also known for his statistical analysis of the diffusion of foreign Euro coins in Germany. Between 1991 and 1997 he was the president of TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
In 2012 the autobiographic book "In zwei Zeiten" was published.
