Eberhard Schnepf worked, mainly light und electron microscopically, at the Universities of Marburg, Göttingen and Heidelberg where he for 30 years lead the ”Lehrstuhl für Zellenlehre”. He studied secretory processes in plants, established the rules of compartmentation in eukaryotic cells, investigated polarity and morphogenesis of plant cells, cell wall formation and the orientation of cellulose fibrils, antagonistic and mutualistic associations between protoctists and microalgae and, in this connexion, the symbiogenetic origin and evolution of plastids. The knowledge of the function and the development of plant cells, of parasitic and symbiotic processes has been considerably enlarged by him.
