Frits Richard Rosendaal is currently chairman of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology at the University Hospital Leiden (The Netherlands). He obtained his doctoral degree in medicine in 1989 from the University of Leiden. The topic of Rosendaal’s doctoral thesis was “Hemophilia: the best of times, the worst of times”.Rosendaal’s major projects and grants include risk factors for venous thrombosis, and predictors of recurrent thrombosis (LETS, MEGA), genetic variation in clotting factors and the risk of arterial thrombosis (RATIO, SMILE), familial basis of venous thrombosis at a young age (GIFT), venous thrombosis in the elderly (AT-AGE) and studies of genetic risk factors, gene-environment and gene-gene interactions in the development of venous thrombosis, which projects also include exogenous female hormones and air travel (WRIGHT); a large project on the effect of obesity on metabolic health and disease occurrence (NEO).Frits Richard Rosendaal has received a number of honors for his work, including Doctor honoris causa, University Descartes (Paris, France) in 2011. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2013, Rosendaal is elected President of the XXIV Congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) in Amsterdam (The Netherlands).
