Fritz Markwardt hat das Pharmakologische Institut der Medizinischen Akademie Erfurt, das er 30 Jahre leitete, zu einem international anerkannten Institut für Pharmakologische Hämostaseologie entwickelt. Seine Forschungsarbeiten sind gekennzeichnet durch die originäre Entwicklung neuer antithrombotischer und hämostyptischer Wirkstoffe, von denen hervorzuheben sind die Isolierung, Struktur-Wirkungs-Analyse und gentechnische Herstellung von natürlichen und synthetischen Inhibitoren der Enzyme der Blutgerinnung, einschließlich deren experimenteller und klinisch-pharmakologischer Untersuchung bis zur klinischen Einführung dieser neuen Arzneistoffklasse. Hinzu kommen die Entwicklung von Fibrinolytika und Antifibrinokytika sowie Hemmstoffen der Thrombozytenfunktion.

Fritz Markwardt is distinguished for importand contributions in various fields of Cardiovascular Pharmacology made at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Medical Academy Erfurt, which he led for 30 years and developed into a world renowned institute for Pharmacological Hemostaseolgy. Thus, he developed novel groups of hemostyptic and antithrombotic drugs, such as naturally occurring and synthetic inhibitors of blood clotting enzymes, their isolation, structure-function-relationship and genetical production as well as experimental and clinical pharmacological development leading to clinical introduction of the novel class of drugs. Furthermore he made major contributions to research into fibrinolytic agents and inhibitors of platelet function.
