Research

Hans G. Beger is distinguished for important contributions in the field of pancreatic diseases. Between 1982 and 2001 he was Chairman of the Department of Visceral and General Surgery at the University of Ulm; in this time period, he contributed with high international acceptance base line data for classification of acute pancreatitis, bacterial translocation in severe acute pancreatitis, and his group published molecular biological data about pain generation in chronic pancreatitis. In chronic pancreatitis, he introduced in clinical practice a duodenum preserving pancreatic head resection (called Beger-Op), which was extended as duodenum preserving total head resection for surgical treatment in cystic tumors and early periampulary cancers. Hans Beger is the initiator of the European Study Group of Pancreatic Cancer (ESPAC) and the Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, Ulm. He is the Principal Editor of the Manual in Pancreatology: “The Pancreas”. 2009 he published Diseases of the Pancreas – Current Surgical Therapy.
