Irmgard Müller is distinguished for many contributions to history of biology, pharmacy and medicine. The majority of these were made from the Institute of the History of Medicine (Ruhr-Universität Bochum), which she established. She was the head of this institution and also of the University Museum of the History of Medicine till 2005.
Her research focus is in history of biology and medicine from 18th until 20th century and in history of medicine and pharmacy in the Middle Ages. She is the editor of “Briefedition Nees von Esenbeck (1776-1858)” and associate editor of “Goethe. Die Schriften zur Naturwissenschaft”. Moreover she cooperates with the interdisciplinary DFG-Research-Group at the Ruhr-Universtität Bochum “Representation of anthropological and medical knowledge in modern age”.
