Peter Noll has made many important contributions to the field of digital coding and transmission of speech, audio, and video signals with a focus on Internet applications. His work has led to pioneering techniques for adaptive quantization and adaptive transform coding which have been incorporated in international standards for low bit rate voice coding and high quality audio transmission and storage. Peter Noll had an excellent reputation for co-authoring a seminal text book “Digital Coding of Waveforms: Principles and Applications To Speech And Video” (Prentice-Hall, USA). The majority of his scientific contributions originated at AT&T Bell Laboratories (USA), at the University of Bremen and at the Institute of Telecommunications of the Technical University of Berlin which he led for over twenty years.
