Peter Schopfer and his collaborators provided important contributions to the field of developmental plant physiology, in particular to the control of growth by light and hormones. Basic knowledge on the biomechanical and biochemical integration of cellular growth processes in the multicellular organism are founded on this work. He developed and experimentally supported the hypothesis that cell growth can be effected by a hormone-controlled production of reactive oxygen radicals in the cell wall.
