Rudolf Taube hat herausragende Ergebnisse auf dem Gebiet der Koordinationschemie erzielt. Von allgemeiner Bedeutung sind insbesondere seine grundlegenden Beiträge (1) zur Redoxreaktivität von Komplexverbindungen, (2) zur Natur der Übergangsmetall-Kohlenstoff-sigma-Bindung und (3) der metallorganischen Komplexkatalyse. Die entscheidenden Struktur-Wirkungsbeziehungen für neuartige Verbindungsklassen wurden geklärt und die Reaktionsmechanismen industriell wichtiger katalytischer Polymerisationsreaktionen erschlossen. Dies wurde durch arbeitsmethodisch anspruchsvolle Synthesen und umfassende analytische Charakterisierung in Verbindung mit eingehender theoretischer Interpretation erreicht.

Rudolf Taube has achieved outstanding results in the field of coordination chemistry. Of particular note are his fundamental contributions in the area of (1) the redox reactivity of coordination compounds, (2) the nature of the transition metal-carbon sigma bond and (3) organometal-mediated homogeneous catalysis. The key structure-reactivity relationships for novel classes of compounds have been disclosed and operative mechanisms for industrially highly valuable catalytic polymerisation reactions have been unravelled. This has been achieved by means of sophisticated synthetic methods and comprehensive analytical characterisation combined with fundamental theory-based interpretation.
