Research

Professor Sir Peter Knight is Senior Research Investigator in the Physics Department at Imperial College and Principal of the Kavli Royal Society International Centre at Chicheley Hall (UK). He retired in September 2010 as Deputy Rector (Research) at Imperial College where he was responsible for the College’s research strategy. Peter Knight’s research has centred on quantum information theory, the properties of atoms in intense laser fields and on quantum properties of radiation, especially non-classical “squeezed states” of light.

He has received major funding for his research programme from Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in the form of research grants and visiting fellowships for visitors to his group. Knight also has European Community contracts for work on quantum information, quantum optics and an EPSRC Programme Grant on atoms in intense fields. Knight is a member of a collaboration on attosecond laser sources funded by the Research Council UK (RCUK) Basic Technology Programme. His work has been supported by the Royal Society and the British Council (through funding of a number of visitors).

Knight is author of more than 450 papers, editor of two books and co-author of two textbooks on quantum optics. He is an ISI “Highlycited” author.
