Wolfgang Steglich ist durch zahlreiche Beiträge zur Chemie der Naturstoffe bekannt, insbesondere durch seine Arbeiten zur Isolierung, Synthese und Biosynthese von Inhaltsstoffen der Pilze und Schleimpilze, die Synthese mariner Pyrrol-Alkaloide und die Verwendung kationischer Glycin-Äquivalente zur Modifizierung von Aminosäuren und Peptiden. Er führte 4-(Dimethylamino)pyridin (DMAP) als nukleophilen Katalysator in die organische Synthese ein und war an der Entwicklung der Strobilurine zu einer der bedeutendsten Klassen kommerzieller Fungizide für den Pflanzenschutz beteiligt.

Wolfgang Steglich is distinguished for his contributions to the chemistry of natural products, especially the isolation, synthesis and biosynthesis of metabolites from mushrooms and slime moulds, the synthesis of marine pyrrole alkaloids, and the use of cationic glycine equivalents for the modification of amino acids and peptides. He introduced 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) as nucleophilic catalyst in organic synthesis and was involved in the development of strobilurins into a major class of commercial fungicides for crop protection.
