Statement

Published by the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering and the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities

Digital Infrastructures are playing an increasingly important role in the processes and developments of a democracy. This is because digitalisation expands the options for information, communication and participation. At the same time, digital technologies can contribute to the rapid spread of false information and hold potential for manipulation, for example before elections. This conflicting field is the subject of the statement "Digitalisation and Democracy". In the statement, the authors analyse aspects of the interaction between digitalisation and democracy. Based on this, they recommend action to shape future developments by politics, law and civil society.
