Professor Dr

Andreas Eckhard Kulozik

Year of election: 2011
Section: Human Genetics and Molecular Medicine
City: Heidelberg
Country: Germany

Research

Andreas Kulozik is distinguished for important scientific contributions at the interface of Pediatric Hematology and Molecular Medicine. His research has focussed on achieving medical progress in a fashion that goes beyond the usual boundaries of disease-oriented and organ-centered research. He discovered molecular mechanisms that explain basic physiological and pathological processes. Andreas Kulozik has become known for work that uncovered the molecular basis for the variable clinical expression of genetic disorders in general and of the hemoglobin disorders thalassemia and sickle cell disease in particular.

Recent seminal work has contributed to the paradigmatic understanding of how RNA stability and RNA processing are regulated and connected these basic biologic mechanisms to common and highly relevant medical problems such as the development of thrombosis, the spread of malignant tumors and inflammation.

It has been important for Andreas Kulozik to fashion the institutional structure of modern biomedical research and is co-founder and co-director of the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit, a joint venture of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the University of Heidelberg which was established in 2002. This initiative, together with heading Department of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Immunology of the University of Heidelberg has thus contributed to effectively integrating the different cultures of basic biology research and medical research, and linking university based research with research at an international non-university research institution.
