Jochen Brandtstädter is distinguished for his contributions to advancing a life-span perspective in developmental psychology. Substantive topics in his research include adult development, action theory, theoretical psychology, development in partnership relations, self-regulatory processes, dynamics of goal commitment and disengagement across adulthood and later life; regarding the latter theme, he has developed a theoretical approach that integrates action-theoretical and developmental perspectives. Jochen Brandtstädter was Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study (Wissenschaftskolleg) Berlin (1983-84) and at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford (1998-99); his memberships include the European Academy of Sciences (Academia Europaea), London.
