Matthias Wilmanns' expertise is in structural biology, in particular by X-ray crystallography to determine structures of biological macromolecules at atomic resolution. His research interests are in the following fields: activity mechanisms of calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases, regulation by transcription, complexes of large muscle proteins, protein translocation into peroxisomes, molecular mechanisms in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Since 1997, he heads the Unit of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Hamburg. Under his leadership, three new powerful synchrotron beamlines at the Petra III ring on campus of DESY for applications in structural biology have been built. He is major contributor in founding a new research center, the Center for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB), in Hamburg.
