Otmar D. Wiestler’s research is focused on the neuropathology of CNS tumors, on the molecular and genetic basis of tumor development in the nervous system, on neural stem cells, and on reconstructive neurobiology. He also made important contributions to the molecular neuropathology of focal human epilepsies.
Otmar D. Wiestler pursued his scientific career 1984 at the University of Freiburg, the University of California, San Diego, and at the University Zurich. From 1992 to 2003 he headed the Department of Neuropathology at the University of Bonn, where he also served as head of the German Brain Tumor Reference Center, as coordinator of the collaborative research center SFB 400, and as medical director of LIFE & BRAIN GmbH. From 2004 to 2015, Otmar D. Wiestler was Chairman of the Management Board of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). Since 2015, he is President of the Helmholtz Association.
