Wolf-Christian Dullo contributed with his research on high resolution paleoclimatology based on corals and sponges (sclerochronology) to the reconstruction of past sea surface temperatures in historic times. He research focuses on the reconstruction of past marine environmental conditions on various time scales. This comprises the study of temperature variability, anthropogenic CO2 input based Carbon isotopes derived from sponges, water-mass dynamics as well as studies on sea level changes by means of small manned submersibles. Recently he focused on cold water corals, their oceanographic boundary conditions, and the development of innovative, geochemical proxies to reconstruct the temperature variability of the intermediate water.
