The energy transition has made significant progress: for every dollar spent on fossil fuels globally today, two dollars are invested into renewable energy. Yet, fossil fuels remain to be the dominant energy source in the G20 energy mix. Furthermore, climate action is facing growing headwinds due to wars and geopolitical tensions as well as trade conflicts and renewed protectionism.
Foundation
Against this backdrop, the Freiburg Energy Talks 2025 took place, a conference initialised by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE). Once per year, international experts discuss the current state of the global energy transition and possible paths forward. This year’s conference focused on how to sustain the momentum of the energy transformation amid current global headwinds. It was co-organised by the Academies’ initiative ‘Energy Systems of the Future’ (ESYS) and Fraunhofer ISE.
The paper “Trends and Challenges of the Global Energy Transition: Insights of the Freiburg Energy Talks 2025” – a joint publication by the Fraunhofer ISE and ESYS – summarises the most important findings of the event. The paper is especially targeted towards political decision makers and business leaders in the energy industry.
Conclusions
Overall, the experts agreed that a significant reduction in fossil fuels in the near future is an essential prerequisite for achieving a climate-friendly energy transition. Key strategies include:
Expanding renewables
Phasing out fossil fuel subsidies
Developing circular supply chains
Boosting energy efficiency
Reducing overall energy demand
More specifically, the paper addresses challenges and potential solutions related to:
- The impact of risk factors on energy security and appropriate response strategies
- The ways in which national and international sectors can leverage clean energy technologies to adapt and continue creating value
- The characteristics of attractive investment conditions that could accelerate the energy transition
- The equitable distribution of the economic benefits arising from the energy transformation
