The long-standing director of the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg shares the Nobel Prize with two French scientists, Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier.
Harald zur Hausen receives this award for his work on research into human papillomaviruses (HPV), the cause of cervical cancer. The President of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Professor Dr Volker ter Meulen, a virologist like Harald zur Hausen, commented: “Harald zur Hausen has impressively demonstrated how to solve a difficult scientific problem in cancer research.
