Jiayang Li is currently Professor of the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He has his Ph.D. in biology from Brandeis University Waltham (MA, USA) in 1991, a M.Sc. in biology from the Institute of Genetics, CAS, in 1984, and a B.Sc. in agronomy from Anhui Agricultural College in 1981. After completing his postdoctoral research at Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at Cornell University Ithaca (NY, USA), he was recruited as a professor of plant molecular genetics by the Institute of Genetics, CAS, in 1995.
His work focuses mainly on the elucidation of molecular mechanisms underlying plant architecture, particularly on the cloning and characterization of genes that control tiller numbers, tiller angle, plant height, panicle size, and culm strength of rice. He is also interested in breeding super elite rice via molecular design by pyramiding the desired properties, such as high yield, good quality, nutrient use efficiency, and resistance to stresses, through molecular marker-assisted selection and transgenic approaches.
Li was the Director of the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, CAS (1999 – 2004) and the Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2004 – 2011). He is currently the President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Vice Minister of Agriculture. Since 2003 he is also President of the Genetics Society of China. He was elected as a CAS academician in 2001 and a fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) in 2004. He was elected as a foreign associate of the USA National Academy of Sciences in 2011.
