Leopoldina ernennt zwei Ehrenförderer

Die Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina zeichnet Horst Dietz, Berlin, und Dagmar Szabados, Halle (Saale) als Ehrenförderer aus. Mit dem Titel Ehrenförderer ehrt die Leopoldina Nichtmitglieder, die in ihrem Wirkungskreis das Wohl der Akademie entscheidend befördert haben. Horst Dietz wird für sein Engagement im Leopoldina Akademie Freundeskreis zum Ehrenförderer ernannt. Dagmar Szabados machte sich während ihrer Amtszeit als Oberbürgermeisterin der Stadt Halle (Saale) um die Kooperation der Stadt mit der Akademie verdient. Die Ernennungen zum Ehrenförderer finden im Rahmen der feierlichen Eröffnung der Jahresversammlung der Leopoldina am Freitag, 20. September 2013, statt.

Nationalakademie Leopoldina lädt zu Besichtigungen am Tag des offenen Denkmals in Halle (Saale) ein

Am bundesweiten Tag des offenen Denkmals, der am Sonntag, 8. September 2013, stattfindet, öffnet die Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina die Türen ihres Hauptsitzes in Halle (Saale). Interessierte Besucher sind eingeladen, das Haus am Jägerberg 1 in der Zeit von 10 bis 16 Uhr zu besichtigen.

Leopoldina Annual Assembly to discuss the shaping of the individual

The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina will focus on the theme “Geist – Gehirn – Genom – Gesellschaft (“Mind, brain, genome and society”) at its 2013 Annual Assembly, which will take place from 20 to 22 September and welcome over 400 guests from around the world to Halle (Saale). The event will focus on the key questions: How do we become the person we are? How does the interplay of our mind, brain, genes and society shape our individual personalities? Researchers from a range of disciplines will present answers to these questions in around 20 lectures during the event. The patron of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Federal President Joachim Gauck, will speak at the official opening ceremony on the Friday afternoon.

Leopoldina zeigt Fotoausstellung „Neue Bilder vom Alter(n)“ in Dortmund

In der Ausstellung „Neue Bilder vom Alter(n)“ zeigt die Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina in Dortmund Fotografien mit unterschiedlichen Lebensentwürfen und Vorstellungen vom Altwerden, die in einem Wettbewerb ausgewählt wurden. Die Bilder stellen Gegenentwürfe zu stereotypen Altersbildern dar, die noch immer die Entfaltung der Potenziale behindern, die Menschen heute im fortgeschrittenen Lebensalter entwickeln können. Die Ausstellung wird am Sonntag, 18. August, um 11 Uhr in der Dortmunder DASA Arbeitswelt Ausstellung eröffnet. Die Ausstellung ist dort bis zum 20. Oktober zu sehen.

Leopoldina signs cooperation agreement with the Academy of Science of South Africa

The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Academy of Science of South Africa are set to collaborate even more in the future, thanks to a cooperation agreement signed in Pretoria by Leopoldina President Professor Jörg Hacker and President of the Academy of Science of South Africa, Professor Daya Reddy.

Report Says Turkish Scientists Unjustly Accused

International Human Rights Science Network Calls for Exoneration of Eight Colleagues. Press release by the International Human Rights Network of Academies and Scholarly Societies forwarded on behalf of the Human Rights Committee (HRC) of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

A report, “Scientists, Engineers, and Medical Doctors in Turkey,” by U.S. Nobel Laureate Peter Diamond, German surgeon Hans-Peter Zenner, and Carol Corillon, executive director of the International Human Rights Network of Academies and Scholarly Societies — for which the report was written — calls on the government of Turkey to release one scientist (serving a 13-year sentence) from prison and drop charges against three others who are in long-term detention and release them immediately and to also drop charges against four others. All are charged with terrorism-related crimes. None is known to have advocated or practiced violence.

Germany, Russia and the EU: Young scientists discuss the horizons of science from European comparative perspectives

Within the “3rd German-Russian Young Researchers Forum” young researchers from both countries as well as representatives of prestigious science and research organisations convene from 21st to 25th July 2013. 35 highly qualified young researchers will meet at Haus Humboldtstein Conference Centre in Bonn-Remagen (Germany). The event is organised by the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the Council of Young Scientists of the RAS and the German Junge Akademie. Now in its third edition, the forum was initiated within the bilateral German-Russian Year of Education, Research and Innovation 2011/2012.

Policy advice and international cooperation – The Leopoldina marks five years as German National Academy of Sciences

The Leopoldina is approaching an important anniversary: 14 July will mark five years since its appointment as the German National Academy of Sciences. Since then, the Leopoldina has established itself as a respected source of science-based policy advice at both the national and international level by publishing recommendations and statements. Looking back at the past five years, Leopoldina President Jörg Hacker said: “We have achieved recognition, particularly as a result of our key topics and statements. The Leopoldina has found its place within the scientific system and is constantly expanding its network of contacts.”

Acht neue Leopoldina-Mitglieder erhalten ihre Urkunden

Im Rahmen des jährlichen Symposiums der Leopoldina-Klasse III erhalten am Donnerstag, 11. Juli, acht hochrangige Wissenschaftler ihre Mitgliedsurkunden aus den Händen des Präsidenten der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina, Professor Jörg Hacker. Die neuen Leopoldina-Mitglieder gehören der Klasse III – Medizin an.
